German Chocolates
When most of us are struck by the burning desire for fine european chocolates we generally tend towards those made in Belgium or France , but we seldom reach for or seek out german chocolates. Why is this? We think it is just a matter of lack of fame on the part of german chocolates, they have not had the press that chocolates from other countries have gotten and so we simply do not know as much about german chocolates.
The variety of German chocolates
There are plenty of manufacturers to chose from when looking for german chocolates. One of the most famous in Germany is the Bremer chocolate company, which has been around since 1890. The founder of the company, Joseph Emile Hachez, was actually of Belgian origin, but is still very much German. They still produce their gourmet chocolates from their headquarters in Bremen, where the company had its start.
The Bremer company is most famous for the chocolate leaves that they produce. They were made for the first time in 1923 and were the brainchild of the current co-owner's grandfather. His grandfather was so moved by the falling of the autumn leaves that he strove to replicate them in chocolate form. The result was a very delicate and intricate design that became a signature of sorts for the company. The beans that they use for all of their german chocolates still come from Ecuador's GUlf of Guayaquil which is a leading grower of top quality cocoa beans. The Bremer company definitely helped to put german chocolates on the proverbial map!
